Biography
Life in the Hedge
Where many children grew up reading gruesome fairy tales where few survived, Carwen, who lived one firsthand, wound up as one of the lucky ones. A tiefling of presumably Mephistopheles stock, they had been a prisoner of the Feywilds since before they could remember. Their parents made a deal with Archfey Baba Yaga. In exchange for her help, the Archfey would be given one of their two children. The deal was set, and when the time came for Baba Yaga to collect, Carwen’s parents broke their end of the deal. Carwen does not know the story beyond that point, but the lesson was firmly set in their mind: Never try to betray Grandmother or her kin, they will get their prize.
Carwen does not know how old they actually are, having existed primarily in the immutable state of the Feywilds. Grandmother did little to keep record—the passage of time as unimportant to her as the countless folk that passed through her hut begging for a boon. Still, as they grew and matured, the home they knew began to chafe under Baba Yaga’s iron fist. Longing for the world outside the Feywilds and for a chance to discover what happened to the family that birthed them, Carwen struck a deal of their own with Baba Yaga.
The pact was not an easy one. The first condition was to find a child to replace them—a deed which Carwen succeeded in. The second was that if they were to ever return to the Feywilds they would never be able to leave again. The third was a mark in red ink upon their neck that looked like a rose and charm of bound thorny vines, for Grandmother would not let her grandchild escape without her watchful eye upon them.
Guilt from the first part of the deal would always linger, but the promise of freedom in that moment was worth it. Carwen plunged into one of the portals that connected Baba Yaga to the outside world. Luck would have that they chose wisely, and they ended up in the continent of Faerûn. Alone, with nothing but Grandmother’s gifts and the cloths on their back, they followed the caravans and traders into the city of Baldur’s Gate hoping to make a new life out from under Grandmother’s claws.
