short brief on character
Biography
Unlike many Bhaalspawns that had entered this world, Avery was not from the flesh of a mortal woman—the first of an experiment to imbue a being with Bhaal essence, and also the first failure. While filled with the murderous desires of their kin, they were already half mad from it. Cast out, appearing like a normal tiefling child, Avery roamed the streets of Baldur’s Gate with the rest of the urchins and unfortunates. At thirteen, the Urge came to a head.
With winter came strange fires and stranger deaths, the killer had never seen. Bodies found in the sewers were pock-marked by the teeth and acid spittle of whoever or whatever was causing the tragedy. A group of once-retired adventurers followed the trail down into the underground, and in the muck and mire found no monster. Filthy, unable to speak, and vicious as the black dragon blood Bhaal had used in their creation, the party found Avery. One of their number, a paladin, took pity on them, swearing them all to secrecy.
The murders and arson were pinned on one of the dead, and the Bhaalspawn had a new home. To call it an adjustment was an understatement. Used to streets, Avery first had to learn their new name and the rules they must live under. The Urge was also a constant thorn in the back of their mind, the only gift that their blood father had given them. The paladin did his best to help curb it, turning the destructive desires into something more helpful. Be it cellar rats or fools who tried to break into the paladin’s shop, any troublemakers met their end to Avery’s wrath.
While not perfect, it seemed so for the Bhaalspawn who had nothing. 14 years, under the eyes of the man who had become many things to Avery. Father, mentor, and lover, a relationship as simple as it was complex. Both would have been happy to idle away in that simple existence, until one night Avery woke not in their home. Trapped in the pod of a nautiloid and the heat of hell raging around them, they broke free chasing after another group of escapees–
